Nissan Leaf ZE1 headlight and fog lamp replacement — step by step

Published: · Updated:

Stone chips, moisture ingress or broken mounting tabs — the Leaf ZE1’s front lamps take the same abuse as any car’s. The good news: fog lamp replacement is a driveway job, and the headlight is manageable too once you know the bumper has to come loose. Here is the process — with the parts we stock.

Before you start

EV basics first: switch the car off and disconnect the 12 V battery’s negative terminal (you won’t touch the high-voltage system, but this keeps the onboard electronics safe). Gloves, a Phillips screwdriver, a 10 mm socket and a trim tool are all you need. Work on cold lamps.

Fog lamp replacement (left/right)

The fog lamp sits in the lower bumper corner and is reached through the wheel-arch liner:

  1. Turn the steering away from the side you are working on to make room at the liner.
  2. Remove the liner’s front clips/screws and fold the liner aside.
  3. Unplug the lamp connector (green plug), undo the fixings and remove the lamp.
  4. The bulb is H8/H11 — it can be replaced on its own if only the bulb has failed.
  5. Fit the new lamp (left: replaces 26155-8995A, right: 26150-8995A) in reverse order; if the bezel is broken, replace it (62257/62256-5SK0B) at the same time.

Headlight replacement

The ZE1 headlight tucks behind the bumper cover at the top and side, so the cover must be loosened or removed: release the upper grille-row clips, the wheel-arch screws and the underside screws, pop the corner free and you can reach the headlight bolts. The LED unit’s connector detaches as one plug. On refitting, check the beam-height adjustment — we recommend a proper beam setup if in doubt. Our used, inspected LED headlight comes with all tabs intact and an undamaged lens.

Typical mistakes to avoid

The most common errors are forcing clips impatiently (in cold weather breakage is almost guaranteed — warm the parts first), pulling connectors by the wire, and skipping the beam adjustment. If a lamp’s mounting tabs are broken, don’t glue them: tab failures eventually cause vibration and moisture ingress — replacement is the lasting fix.

Frequently asked questions

Which bulb fits the Leaf ZE1 halogen fog lamp?
An H8/H11 halogen bulb. It can be swapped without removing the lamp unit, working through the wheel-arch liner.
Does the bumper have to come off for a headlight swap?
At least partially, yes: the headlight fixings sit behind the bumper cover, so the corner must be released or the cover removed.
Left or right fog lamp — how do I know which I need?
Sides are named in the direction of travel: left as seen from the driver’s seat. Our product pages have a side selector, and the moulded L/R marking on the housing confirms it.
Is beam alignment needed after replacement?
Recommended: the height adjuster can shift during the job. Any workshop with a beam-setter can align it in minutes.
