Nissan Leaf ZE1 battery health (SOH): how to check it before buying

When buying a used Nissan Leaf, one number tells you more than any advert: the battery SOH (State of Health). It shows what percentage of the original capacity is left — in practice, what the car is worth. Here is how to check it yourself with a cheap dongle.
What is SOH and why does it matter most?
SOH is the battery’s current capacity versus new, as a percentage. On a 40 kWh ZE1, 90% SOH means roughly 36 kWh usable — with proportionally less range. The 12-bar capacity gauge on the dash shows the same thing coarsely: the first bar disappears at roughly 85% SOH. The Leaf’s pack is passively air-cooled, so degradation is more sensitive to heat and frequent rapid charging than in liquid-cooled rivals.
How to read it: LeafSpy + OBD2
The standard method is the LeafSpy app (Android/iOS) with a Bluetooth OBD2 adapter:
- Plug the OBD2 adapter into the diagnostic port under the steering wheel.

- When buying, ask for this reading — a fair seller will show it willingly.
What counts as a good value?
A rough rule of thumb for 2017–2022 ZE1s: above 90% is excellent, 85–90% is a good average, 80–85% means noticeable range loss, and below 80% only makes sense with a serious discount. Nissan’s capacity warranty is 8 years / 160,000 km and applies when the gauge drops below 9 bars (about 66% SOH) — so warranty replacements are rare in practice. Between two same-year Leafs, a 10% SOH difference is easily one to two bars of real-world range.
How to slow degradation
Avoid storing at 100% for long periods (20–80% is ideal for daily use), avoid back-to-back CHAdeMO rapid charges in summer (pack heat is when ageing accelerates), and park in the shade when you can. Range loss cannot be fixed "in software" — the BMS resets advertised online only cosmetically adjust the display, not the capacity.
