Nissan Leaf ZE0 vs ZE1: which parts are interchangeable?

Published: · Updated:

The two Leaf generations look like the same genre, but technically they are two different cars: parts for the first-generation ZE0 (2010–2017, including the 30 kWh AZE0) and the second-generation ZE1 (2017 onwards) are mostly NOT interchangeable. This guide shows where the line runs — and how to decide for sure using the part number.

The quick rule: the part number decides, not the looks

The middle block of a Nissan part number carries the model code: ZE1 front body parts typically read 5S… (pre-facelift) or 6W… (facelift) — for example grille frame 62070-5SK0B, charge port lid 62320-5SK2A. The same ZE0 parts belong to 3N…-series families. If the middle blocks differ, the part is not interchangeable, however similar it looks.

Definitely NOT shared

The entire front end and the lighting are generation-specific:

  1. Grille frame, grille insert, emblem, front bumper and its brackets
  2. Headlights and fog lamps (different shape, mounting and connectors)
  3. Bonnet, wings, doors, tail lights
  4. Charge port lid and its mechanism
  5. Battery pack (24/30 kWh vs 40/62 kWh — physically different)

Shared or partly shared

The wheel bolt pattern is 5×114.3 on both generations, so wheels can be swapped (check size and offset). CHAdeMO and Type 2 charging is standard on both, so charging cables carry over. Minor fittings (some clips, bulbs in non-LED lamps) may match — but the same rule applies: a matching part number is the only certainty.

How to verify before ordering

Find the printed/moulded part number on your existing part, or send us your VIN — we can look up exactly which version your car needs. Every product page of ours lists the compatible OEM part numbers so you can compare with yours.

Frequently asked questions

Does a ZE0 grille or bumper fit the ZE1?
No. The whole front end (grille frame, insert, bumper, headlights) is generation-specific — ZE0 3N…-series and ZE1 5S…/6W…-series part families are not interchangeable.
Are wheels shared between the two generations?
The bolt pattern is 5×114.3 on both, so wheels generally swap over — check wheel size, offset and tyre size, of course.
How do I know for sure which generation I have?
The ZE1 was built from late 2017 with an all-new body. The safest checks are the VIN or the part number on your existing part — send either to us and we will confirm what fits.
Can a ZE0 battery be fitted to a ZE1?
No — the packs differ in size, capacity and connections. Even same-generation battery swaps are specialist-workshop territory.
